I will be at table S-13 for Emerald City Comicon this year!
The show has increased in size by quite a bit, so I made a handy map to find me. If you have been to the convention in the past, it should be fairly familiar as it is where Artist's Alley has been for some time.

I'll have a few new prints as well as an exclusive art card that comes with a free sketch. I did the art card in 2011 and it sold out pretty much the first day, so if you want one please come early!

Hope to see you there!

Six Feet Under - Unborn

Here's my latest work for Six Feet Under for their new album, "Unborn".

This cover presented a little bit of a challenge to me because it was very important to the band to keep a thematic similarity to "Undead". The reason for this is that some of the songs off of this new album were written at the same time as Undead (which is why this album is dropping so much faster than your average album cycle). You'd be surprised how difficult it can be to make something "similar but different" and not look TOO similar.

After getting some lyrics (and keeping in mind the lyrics from Undead), I tried to convey the idea that a mind is being ripped in two, but in the ashes of that a new personality is born - or unborn.

I hope you enjoy the new work! I am confident it represents the music well and I am sure fans will enjoy it.

Revolver's Best Metal Album Art of 2012

This was a nice surprise!

As I said in my last post, it has been an incredible hectic year. I haven't had a lot of time for personal artwork and even less time for freelance art. Happily, I can reveal one of the few pieces that I did in 2012 now - the album cover for Magor's "Drawn to the Dark'!

The band simply wanted a dark portal and a naked figure crawling and reaching out toward it, but the rest was my interpretation of the concept.

This one was a little difficult for me because I was smack dab in the middle of buying a house while I was making it. But I think the perseverance paid off and the band was happy.

I hope you enjoy it as well!

2013.

It has been a long while since I updated the site with some art so I figured I would offer an explanation as to what has been going on in my life this summer. For starters, my wife and I bought a house! It's a beautiful house in the woods on 5 acres of land and we really could not be more excited. It really is the most inspirational place to be an artist - out in nature. So I, for one, am very excited about creating some new art soon.

Unfortunately, it did mean that all creative activity hit a standstill over the last 6 months. Other than a few cartoony doodles here and there, I just have not had the time to do anything. There will be a piece or two being released soon for bands, but everything will be few and far between until next year.

I don't really want to get into any specifics (as I have shot myself in the foot announcing things too early before), but I definitely have some nice projects coming up.

That said, next year I am going to be attempting some new goals. The metal band art will be taking a bit of a sideline in my life while I focus on these new goals and, of course, adjust to being a home owner. It doesn't mean I won't be doing any work for bands, but it does mean that I am going to be a lot pickier. I get a lot of emails with a lot of interesting concepts every week, but it will be hitting a point here soon where I have to just say "I'm sorry, I am not interested in this project at this point in time". I want any future people to know that if you write me and I say that, it is nothing personal. I just have other artistic areas that I would like to get into besides heavy metal art.

Thank you for continuing to check back! I'm certain I'll have some exciting things to post soon!

MetalBandArt article about Six Feet Under - "Undead" cover

If you head on over to MetalBandArt, you can see an article that I wrote about the process I used to make the new Six Feet Under album cover.

There are a lot of stages to making a cover like this, so I really wanted to give a sneak peak into some of them for fans, of course, but also young artists who are curious about my techniques. Helping young artists is something that is very important to me, because I remember what it was like to be 19 years old and completely clueless on what to do. All I knew was "draw more!" and for the most part that is still the advice I give on a high level. But there are still a lot of things that I can share to hopefully enlighten people to my process, at least, and if they can take something away from that or even just get inspired then that means the world to me.

So head on over there and let me know what you think!
Also, for this week only, there is a contest to win one of my prints! How cool is that?

Reign in Art Interview.

At long last, I can finally show the art for the new Six Feet Under album, "Undead".

This was a pretty gnarly one to do. We must have went through 20 sketches or so before we found one that was just right and oddly enough the sketch for this one was one of the most basic ones that I did. Chris Barnes really latched onto the concept behind it, though, and the rest is history.

There's a lot going on...a lot of hidden meanings that I will leave you to figure out on your own.

There is even a subtle homage to a past album design. Anyways, enough talking...here's the cover and the band photo!
